What is Cryptitis?
Cryptitis is an inflammatory process in the rectum where the anal glands are inflamed. The boundary between the outer skin and the transitional epithelium of the anal canal to the mucosa of the rectum resembles a jagged line called the Linea dentata. The points are called anal papillae, and the "valleys" between the points are called crypts. The ducts of the anal glands open deep into the crypts. If the duct of such an anal gland becomes blocked, it leads to cryptitis. Cryptitis mainly arises due to problems with stool evacuation. Cryptitis is the precursor to the anal fistula, with the transitions being gradual. Cryptitis is a rather rarely diagnosed condition involving inflammation of the ducts of the anal glands. These glands are only slightly developed in humans and are often the cause of anal complaints. However, these complaints are often also attributed to hemorrhoids.
What are the symptoms of cryptitis?
Symptoms of cryptitis can include dull discomfort around the anus, such as stabbing or pressure in the anus, burning after bowel movements, or itching inside and outside the anus. These complaints are often also attributed to hemorrhoids as well. Read more here about the symptoms of cryptitis and the causes of cryptitis.

What can I do against cryptitis, anal fistulas, and anal abscesses?
A simple cryptitis can usually be healed with consistent ointment and dilation treatment. Find comprehensive information here on the treatment of cryptitis. In contrast, anal fistulas and anal abscesses require evaluation by a proctology specialist and surgery. CANNEFF® SUP suppositories for rectal use can relieve symptoms of cryptitis and support the healing process in anal fistulas and after colorectal surgeries.
